Beware of hazards around solar energy systems:

Like any other source of electricity, solar panels can pose a hazard. Although our engineering team and inspectors adhere to the latest edition of NFPA NEC electrical code, a variety of hazards are associated with roof-mounted and free standing solar systems. Be aware of the following:

  • Shock or electrocution from contacting wiring
  • Inhalation of toxic smoke from burning solar panels
  • Unstable and rotting metal roofing
  • Injury and endangerment of others from walking on, tripping, and falling on solar panels (slips, trips, falls).

Prevent injury:

Unqualified persons must keep clear of solar energy installation and components.

  • Never walk on solar panels
  • Never cut conduit or the solar system’s electrical wiring
  • Never interfere with wiring associated with an energized solar power system
  • Never break a panel or contact a damaged system
  • Never enter an energized solar farm without permission

For first responders:

  • Circle the building and follow any solar identified electrical conduit to locate the solar panels.
  • Cover solar panels with a black or blue tarp to block any light from shining onto the panels. Make sure the tarp is secured and will not blow away.
  • Educate yourself in the operation of solar energy equipment to understand how to respond in the event of an emergency.
